The new E-Syariah system for the Brunei Courts was launched recently on 21 January 2017 during the second annual gathering of Syariah Courts. The system, which was launched by the Chief Syar’ie Judge Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Haji Besar, is part of a continuous effort by the Syariah Courts to upgrade their services with support from the State Judiciary Department.
The launching was the culmination of a two year project which was awarded to SAINS’ Brunei partner, ZimacSilicon in December 2014. The project saw the implementation of SAINS’ Court Management Solution, JustitiaSolusis, in the Brunei Syariah Courts.
The E-Syariah system is expected to improve the efficiency and productivity of the Shariah courts services. Through it, judges and registrars will be able to access case files from any location. The system also provides simultaneous access to multiple case files. The system will also expedite the process of filing and document acquisition as well as the case processing to produce much faster decision making.
The system contains a number of modules, which provides facilities for the public including online court procedures and regulations. The public can also forward any enquiries on the court services and procedures to make the Shariah Court become more transparent including the issuance of marriage certificates. The system also provides a faraid or inheritance accounting system which is through the e-syariah portal that can provide accounting decisions that are quick and precise.
According to the Chief Syar’ie Judge, The e-Syariah system will reduce the use of paper and the need for storage space to keep it apart from avoiding the hassles associated with the physical transfer of files.
He also noted that the system will facilitate online monitoring of cases handled by all Syar’ie judges at all court stages and further improve handling of the cases.
